Frequently Asked Questions

Functional medicine is a personalized approach to healthcare that looks beyond symptoms to explore the underlying factors that may be contributing to your health concerns.

Rather than focusing solely on managing a diagnosis, we look at the whole picture—including nutrition, lifestyle, hormones, gut health, metabolism, sleep, stress, genetics, environment, and laboratory data.

The goal is to understand why you may be experiencing the symptoms you are experiencing and develop an individualized plan to support better health.

Conventional medicine is incredibly valuable for diagnosing and treating acute illness, disease, and emergencies. Functional medicine complements traditional care by taking a deeper look at patterns that may contribute to chronic symptoms and health concerns.

Instead of asking only, "What diagnosis does this symptom represent?", we also ask: "Why is this happening, and what factors may be contributing?"

Functional medicine often involves more time, detailed history-taking, personalized testing, nutrition and lifestyle strategies, and ongoing evaluation.

True North Functional Medicine focuses on a variety of chronic and complex health concerns, including:

  • Hormonal changes and hormone imbalance
  • Perimenopause and menopause
  • Thyroid concerns
  • Digestive and gut health
  • Bloating, constipation, and diarrhea
  • SIBO and dysbiosis
  • H. pylori
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Brain fog
  • Metabolic health and insulin resistance
  • Weight management
  • Low libido
  • Sleep concerns
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Men's and women's hormone health

Your care is individualized based on your symptoms, history, goals, and laboratory findings.

No.

Many patients come to functional medicine because they don't feel well but haven't received a clear explanation for their symptoms.

You may be experiencing fatigue, digestive problems, weight changes, hormonal symptoms, brain fog, or other concerns even when conventional testing has been "normal."

We can review your history and existing laboratory work and determine whether additional evaluation may be appropriate.

Your first visit is focused on understanding you.

We will review your health history, current symptoms, medications and supplements, lifestyle, nutrition, previous laboratory testing, and health goals.

Depending on your individual needs, we may recommend additional laboratory or functional testing.

You will leave with a clearer understanding of your health concerns and a personalized plan for moving forward.

Yes. Laboratory testing is an important part of functional medicine, but not every patient needs every test.

Testing is selected based on your symptoms, medical history, previous results, and goals.

Depending on your needs, testing may include:

  • Comprehensive blood work
  • Thyroid testing
  • Hormone testing
  • Metabolic and cardiovascular markers
  • Nutritional testing
  • GI-MAP® stool testing
  • DUTCH® hormone testing
  • Organic Acids Testing
  • SIBO breath testing
  • Other specialized testing when clinically appropriate

Absolutely.

If you have recent laboratory results, bring them with you. We can review your existing testing and determine what additional information, if any, would be helpful.

We don't believe in repeating tests simply for the sake of testing.

Yes, when clinically appropriate.

Functional medicine does not mean avoiding conventional medications. Medications can be an important and necessary part of healthcare.

Our approach is to look at the full picture and use appropriate therapies—including medications, nutrition, lifestyle changes, supplements, and other interventions—when indicated.

Hormone therapy may be appropriate for some patients after an individualized evaluation.

We may work with patients experiencing symptoms associated with perimenopause, menopause, low testosterone, or other hormonal concerns.

Hormone therapy is never one-size-fits-all. Treatment decisions are based on your symptoms, history, laboratory data, risk factors, and goals.

When appropriate, thyroid medication may be part of your treatment plan.

We evaluate thyroid function in the context of your symptoms, laboratory findings, medical history, and overall health rather than relying on a single thyroid marker.

Certain prescription therapies, including medications used for metabolic health and weight management, may be considered when clinically appropriate.

These therapies are evaluated as part of a comprehensive approach that may also include nutrition, strength training, sleep, metabolic health, and behavior change.

Yes.

Functional medicine should complement—not replace—appropriate primary and specialty medical care.

We encourage patients to maintain their relationship with their primary care provider and other healthcare professionals involved in their care.

When appropriate, we may recommend additional evaluation or collaboration with another healthcare professional.

True North Functional Medicine is a private-pay functional medicine practice.

Because functional medicine visits often involve extended appointment times and personalized care that may not be covered by insurance, visits are paid directly by the patient.

You may be able to use an HSA or FSA for certain healthcare expenses depending on your plan. We recommend checking with your individual plan administrator.

Appointments are based on the amount of time reserved for your care.

The current consultation rate is $300 per hour.

Additional costs may apply for laboratory testing, supplements, medications, or other services when recommended.

You will be informed of additional costs before proceeding whenever possible. Memberships and packages available soon.

It depends on your individual needs.

Some patients may need more frequent follow-up initially, while others may require less frequent visits once their health plan is established.

Follow-up visits allow us to review progress, evaluate laboratory results, adjust your plan, and determine the next appropriate steps.

Everyone responds differently.

Some patients notice improvements relatively quickly, while chronic or complex health concerns may take more time.

Our goal is not to promise a quick fix. We focus on identifying meaningful contributors to your symptoms and creating sustainable changes that support your long-term health.

Our role is to evaluate your symptoms, history, examination findings when applicable, and laboratory data to help identify potential contributors to your health concerns.

Functional medicine is not about finding a single explanation for every symptom. Health is complex, and several factors may contribute to how you feel.

We will work with you to understand the most important findings and determine appropriate next steps.

Functional medicine may be a good fit if you:

  • Want a more personalized approach to your health
  • Have chronic symptoms that haven't been fully explained
  • Want to better understand your laboratory results
  • Are interested in addressing lifestyle and nutritional factors
  • Want to take a more proactive approach to your health
  • Feel like something is "off" despite being told your labs are normal
  • Want to work collaboratively with a provider on long-term health goals

If you're looking for a quick prescription without a deeper evaluation, functional medicine may not be the right approach for you.

 If available, bring or upload:

  • Recent laboratory results
  • Imaging reports
  • Current medication list
  • Current supplement list
  • Relevant medical records
  • Your main health concerns
  • Questions or goals you would like to address

Completing your intake forms before your appointment will also help us make the most of your time together.

No.

True North Functional Medicine is not an emergency or urgent care practice.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, severe symptoms, or a potentially life-threatening condition, seek emergency medical care or contact your local emergency services.

No.

Functional medicine is intended to be part of a comprehensive approach to healthcare. We encourage appropriate preventive care, screenings, acute care, and specialty care when indicated.

Our goal is to work alongside your existing healthcare team when appropriate.

 Our goal is simple:

To help you understand your health, identify meaningful contributors to your symptoms, and create a personalized path toward feeling and functioning better.

At True North, we believe healthcare should be personal, collaborative, and centered around the individual—not just the diagnosis.

Your health has a direction. Let's find your True North.
